The Shropshire
originated from sheep that roamed the common on
the Shropshire and Staffordshire borders during
the 19th Century.
They were the first
sheep breed in England to publish a Flock Book,
which was in 1883. For some 50-60 years before
that date, breeders had fixed the type resulting
in classes being held for Shropshires at the
English Royal Show.
From 1900-1920 some
6,700 Shropshire rams were exported throughout
the world.
The down type fleece is used
for hosiery and hand knitting yarn. Australian
numbers have declined during recent
years.
